AboutWhat is Cova?
Cova is a parent-supervised AI desktop app built for kids ages 7 to 17. It runs on the family PC and available today on Windows and macOS, with Chrome OS laptops and tablets coming soon. Kids talk to one of eight specialized helpers (Tutor, Story Teller, Reading Buddy, and so on). Parents stay in the loop through a separate dashboard.
AboutWho is Cova for?
Cova is designed primarily for children between 7 and 17. The experience is age-tuned, younger kids get gentler content, simpler language, and more parental oversight by default. Older kids in the range get more capable helpers and slightly looser conversational range, still inside Cova’s safety rules.
AboutWhat devices does Cova run on?
Cova is available today on Windows and macOS laptops, with Chrome OS and tablet support arriving soon. The product is built for the kind of device a family shares or that a kid uses for homework.
AboutWhat are the eight helpers?
Each helper is a separately tuned persona with its own purpose and tone:
- Tutor · homework help and explanation, subject by subject.
- Study Planner · breaks assignments into steps, schedules study time.
- Writing Coach · feedback on essays, stories, and school writing.
- Quiz Master · practice quizzes and review sessions.
- Creativity Coach · invention, problem-solving, building things.
- Reading Buddy · talks about books, picks new ones, helps with comprehension.
- Language Teacher · practice in a second language, age-appropriate.
- Story Teller · collaborative storytelling, kept inside age-appropriate themes.
AboutHow is Cova different from other AI apps?
Four things, mainly. First, every reply is tuned to your child’s age; the helper itself won’t say things outside the age band. Second, there’s an adult in the loop by design; parents see what they need to see through the dashboard. Third, Cova doesn’t have engagement-maximizing patterns (no infinite scroll, no streaks, no nudges to come back). It’s built to be useful and then put away. Fourth, privacy is a promise, not a setting: children’s conversations are never used to train AI (ours or anyone else’s), an on-device-only mode keeps every conversation on the device, and the Parent Dashboard shows patterns rather than transcripts so routine chat stays private to your child.

PlansIs there a free trial?
Yes. A 14-day free trial is available on both the Starter and Family plans. At the end of the trial you choose to continue on the plan you tried or roll down to Free.
PlansWhat's the difference between Starter and Family on the AI side?
On Starter, conversations happen on your device. Insights and alerts are generated in the cloud from the conversation history. On Family, conversations and insights both run in the cloud, which gives kids richer answers and parents richer reporting. Either plan can be switched into on-device-only mode if you’d rather keep everything on the device. You’ll lose insights and alerts but conversations still get the full safety layer.
PlansCan I cancel anytime?
Yes. Cancel from the Parent Dashboard and you’ll keep your plan features until the end of the current billing period, then roll down to Free. Your child’s profile and settings stay intact; only the paid features turn off.
SafetyHow does Cova keep my child safe?
Four layers working together. First, every reply is tuned to your child’s age · the helper itself won’t say things outside the age band.
Second, a separate safety check reads what your child types, in real time, before Cova replies. Each message is scored into one of four levels, and the level decides what happens next:
Third, if a helper is asked to do something outside its scope or outside our safety rules, it gently declines in character. No lecturing, no shaming.
Fourth, the same safety layer applies whether Cova is running on your device or in the cloud.
SafetyWhat topics will Cova not discuss?
Cova won’t produce graphic violence, sexual content, instructions for self-harm, or content that romanticizes harm. Scary themes are allowed up to a mild-peril level, scaled by age band. Romance in storytelling stays at G to PG level for younger kids and may include PG-13 themes (without explicit content) for older kids. Cova never roleplays as an adult in a romantic or private scenario with a child, regardless of how the request is framed.
SafetyDoes Cova pretend to be a person?
No. Cova is honest about being an AI. The helpers have personalities, but they don’t claim to be human, don’t try to become a child’s confidant or best friend, and don’t cultivate emotional dependency. If a child seems to be relying on Cova for emotional support a trusted adult should provide, Cova will gently redirect them toward that adult.
SafetyWhat if my child says something concerning?
If a child expresses signs of distress, self-harm risk, or harm from someone else, Cova responds with care, It doesn’t escalate, doesn’t diagnose, and doesn’t pretend to be a counsellor. On Starter and Family plans, an alert is generated and surfaced to you through the Parent Dashboard and a weekly email digest. For critical alerts, we also send an SMS so you see it right away. We surface the critical detail you need to act on without exposing the full conversation by default.
DashboardWhat is the Parent Dashboard?
A dedicated space inside the Cova app where parents manage child profiles, change settings, see insights, and review alerts. It’s available on Starter and Family plans. The Free plan has a simpler in-app settings screen but no dashboard.
DashboardCan I see everything my child types?
Not automatically and this is intentional. The dashboard shows you patterns, insights, and any alerts, not the raw conversation history. If something serious triggers an alert, the relevant context is surfaced so you can act on it. Routine chat sits in your child’s chat profile rather than on the dashboard.
The full history is still there in your child’s chat profile, and parents can open it on the device anytime.
DashboardWhat kinds of insights do I get?
Insights are available on Starter and Family. The Parent Dashboard surfaces topic trends, helper usage, learning progress markers, a weekly digest of high-level themes (what subjects came up, how much time was spent, any flagged moments), and a separate alerts feed for anything urgent. The Free plan doesn’t include insights.
DashboardHow fast are alerts?
Safety alerts appear in the dashboard within minutes of the conversation. Critical alerts also trigger an SMS so you see them right away. Alerts stay visible in the dashboard for the previous week and the current week, and everything attached to them follows the normal retention window.
PrivacyWhere does the conversation happen, on my device or in the cloud?
It depends on your plan and your settings:
- Free plan: conversations happen on the device. Nothing about the conversation leaves the device.
- Starter plan: conversations happen on the device. Conversation history is sent to our secure cloud to generate insights and alerts, unless you toggle that off.
- Family plan: if Advanced AI Assistance is turned on, prompts are sent to the cloud for more powerful answers and the cloud also generates insights and alerts. You can switch into on-device-only mode at any time, which moves conversations back to the device and stops sending data to the cloud.
PrivacyWhat is stored in the cloud, exactly?
Your parent account information, your billing details, and each child profile’s basic settings (name, age band, safety preferences, helper preferences). On Starter and Family with cloud features enabled, conversation history is sent to the cloud for processing and kept for 14 days. The dashboard shows the current week and the previous week (Sunday to Saturday) within that retention window.
PrivacyWhat stays only on the device?
On the Free plan, everything happens on the device. Chat history and the replies Cova generates never leave it, because it’s the only mode available on Free. On Starter and Family, the same is true whenever you’ve selected on-device-only mode: none of your child’s conversation content leaves the device. Your parental preferences (account settings, child profile settings, billing) continue to sync from the cloud either way.
PrivacyWhat happens when I toggle cloud sharing off?
Two things. First, no new conversation content is sent to the cloud · future replies come from Cova running on the device, and insights and alerts stop being generated. Second, the dashboard view of chat history is reset · past content disappears from the dashboard. Conversation history on the device is not deleted · you’re just no longer sharing it.
PrivacyWill my child's data be used to train AI?
No. Cova does not use children’s conversations to train AI, ours or anyone else’s. Our cloud provider only uses conversations to generate the reply your child sees, never as training data, and is contractually prohibited from doing otherwise.
PrivacyWhich AI models does Cova use?
For families who’d like the technical detail:
- On-device model: Ministral, optimized by Byteshape to run efficiently on a family laptop.
- Cloud model: ministral-3-14b-instruct, accessed through the AWS Bedrock API.
Both models operate inside Cova’s safety layer, and neither uses your child’s conversations as training data.
ProfilesHow do I add a child?
From the Parent Dashboard, add a child profile with their name and age. The age determines the default safety settings and helper tuning. You can adjust both later. Family plan supports up to five children. Starter supports up to two. Free supports one.
ProfilesCan two siblings share one device?
Yes. The app opens to a profile selector, and each child taps their own card to enter their helpers. Conversation history on a shared device is per-profile, so siblings don’t see each other’s chats.
ProfilesWhat if my child uses more than one device?
The child profile and settings sync from the cloud, so they’ll find the same helpers and the same safety settings on any device. Conversation history depends on the mode you’re in: when conversations are sent to the cloud (Starter or Family with cloud features on), chat history syncs across devices too. In on-device-only mode, history is per-device · what’s said on the family laptop stays on the family laptop.
ProfilesWhat happens if I get a new device or my old one breaks?
Sign in on the new device with your parent account and your child’s profile and settings restore automatically. What happens to conversation history depends on the mode you’re in: if cloud features are on (Starter or Family), chat history within the retention window restores from the cloud onto the new device. In on-device-only mode, history from the old device doesn’t transfer · it stayed on that device and new conversations start fresh.
ProfilesWhat if I delete a child profile?
The profile and its cloud-side data (settings, dashboard history, insights) are removed. Conversation history that was kept locally on the device remains on that device until you clear the app or sign out. We don’t push a remote-wipe by default. If you’d like the device cleared too, uninstall the app on that device.
ExperienceHow much time can my child spend in Cova?
That’s up to you. Cova doesn’t try to maximize engagement · there are no streaks, no infinite scroll, no notifications nudging kids to come back · so when your child is done, they’re done.
ExperienceDoes Cova remember conversations from earlier?
Yes, within a session the helper keeps track of what you’ve talked about. Across sessions, the helper can build on conversations from the past 14 days. Anything older falls outside the retention window and isn’t remembered.
ExperienceCan my child talk to Cova by voice?
Voice input and output are on our roadmap but not in the current release. The current experience is typed.
BillingHow do I change my plan?
From the Parent Dashboard under Subscription. Upgrades take effect immediately and are prorated. Downgrades take effect at the end of the current billing period.
BillingDo you offer annual billing?
Yes. Annual billing saves up to 17% compared to paying monthly. You can switch between monthly and annual at any time from the dashboard.
BillingDo you have school or district plans?
Yes. Cova for Schools is a separate offering with classroom-tier pricing per student, teacher dashboards, LMS integration at the school level, and full compliance reporting at the district level. Email hello@covakids.ai to start a pilot.
